Living in the UAE, we are accustomed to seeing green bushes pruned into bulbous shapes and adorning the Abu Dhabi Corniche. We haven’t seen such pruned bushes in Dubai, but if there are let us know.

Today, we bring you green sculptures, not only for the colour, but for the fact that they are fresh, natural, and environmentally friendly.  Green sculptures are a way of communicating to the public about being environmental friendly ways for beautifying the seaside or country side.

The month of April (the month of Autism) has passed, but I’ve been meaning to share the series of ads on autism. Love the way that they tie the visuals with the words to the core of what autism is about.  May parents reach out to their children before its too late. April being the month of Autism, I’m sharing an ad focussed on autism. This one is to do with the realisation that autistic kids are gifted genuises in disguises and if given a chance the geniuses within them are allowed to take the spotlight and demonstrate such masterpieces of world that takes the world by storm.

I’m fascinated with ads that catch one’s attention. In this ad, the two faces of autism are depicted. Derek Paravicini who is a blind British pianist with autism showcases his two sides, each having a compelling story to share.  He was invited to perform at a concert in Slovenia, the proceeds of which helped raise funds of gifted children with autism.

The photographer was a Slovenian teenager suffering from autism.

A bit late in posting. This month happens to be the 366th birth anniversary of renowned German naturalist and illustrator Maria Sibylla Merian. Google took the opportunity to celebrate this anniversary by creating what is called the Google Doodle showcasing some of her amazing illustrations of the animal kingdom, before the dawn of cameras and photographs.

Born in Frankfurt, she spent many years of her late adult life travelling to Surinam, and South America. Upon her return to Amsterdam she published an epic called Metamorphosis Insectorum Surinamensium (The Metamorphoses of the Insects of Suriname). This reminds me of my own illustrations as part of our botanical classes, illustrating and describing the life cycle of a butterfly many time, which, to this day, I remember well.

My favourite sculpture of them all has got to be the T4 Bacteriophage, seen below.

We are used to seeing photos of microbes in myriad colours that many believe that’s how microbes actually look. Luke Jerram has used his color blindedness in creating visual models of the microbial world devoid of such vibrant colours and glass, it seems, would be the best vehicle to showcase them. Some of the sculptures remind me of the delicate glass slipper of Cinderella.

Jerram is assisted by the virologists from the University of Bristol when it comes to accurately calibrating the sculptures.  Once the technical drawings that he generates are approved by the scientists, then his team of glass blowers get to work.

Jerram also creates sculptures based on seismic data (read more about it on his website at Luke Jerram).  They remind me of the blog post I had written on Nathalie Miebach and her weather data related sculptures.

Lithographs prints on cushions and home decor

Haeckel Haus Co. is a dedication to the 19th century German biologist Ernest Haeckel, who coined terms such as ecology, stem cell and the kingdom Protista. His published artwork called Kunstformen der Natur (or Artforms of nature), showcases lithographs of species that he had discovered, described and named.

This cushion is patterned differently on each side featuring different types of starfish.

Haeckel’s work has now been revived through the company where his lithographs are printed on scarves, cushions, and canvasses.

This serpent scarf is awesome!

One of the reasons that I started this blog was a reminder of my school days when we had to submit illustration assignments related to botany and anatomical subjects. I spent hours drawing and paying perfect attention to detail and accurate while aesthetic looking.  Haeckel’s work as seen on home decor and fashion, is a trip down that memory lane.
